On April 23, 2020, the CDC released guidelines for veterinary practices “to facilitate preparedness and to ensure practices are in place in a veterinary clinical setting to help people and animals stay safe and healthy” during the COVID-19 pandemic. The primary takeaways from the guidance include:
- Recommending ill staff members stay home, especially if they are experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19
- Reschedule all elective surgeries, procedures and routine appointments
- Screen pets to determine if they’ve made contact with COVID-19 patients
In addition to these advisories, the CDC also recommends employing PPE optimization strategies, cleaning more frequently and keeping pet owners informed.
